Here is a video of a pair of Astatheros altifrons guarding their latest batch of newly hatched fry. The eggs were laid on a horizontal piece of slate, sprinkled with a thin layer of sand (just enough to camouflage them) and then guarded, mainly by the female who is a force to contend with. She keeps "reminding" the male to be attentive (sometimes he loses his' train of thought') and keeps the other two females in the tank at bay. She is a major excavator as well, moving a substantial amount of sand away from the fry. She is decked out in her "beware" attire and a real going concern.
