ok so i have seen these guys categorized as amphilophus and as astatheros so which is it really? also does anyone have these? wanna post pics:naughty: was thinking of doing either an escondido or lahillas pair but have been searching around and really like the look of these guys (kind of like a poor man's umbie lol) those of you that have them, how are they with tankmates? would be going into a 5ft 120g tank with a male gt and future female festae (gts are 2in max, still figuring out if i have male or not and festae are still fry) are they pretty personable or are they skittish and hide all the time?

Astatheros. I have three species - A. robertsoni, A. altifrons, and A. rhytisma. These are CA sand sifters....relatively peaceful and don't bother anybody, but are able to hold their own against larger CAs...probably not the most aggressive ones tho. I keep them with a large pair of bocourti and it's working great.

ok great thanks, and from what im reading one place says they get 8, one says 9, and another says 10:nilly: so how big is actually realistic for these guys to grow and it says that they are hard to breed, has anyone on here been successful with this as i definitely want to get a pair of fish that will produce some little ones:D

I never kept Robertsoni myself. But I heard from many that they are very aggressive to their own kind. Males will typically kill a mate.

TheFishGuy has a male 10+".

They should however be fine with other species as singles.

Yes, Robertsoni's are extremely aggressive to there own kind. It is very hard to get a compatable pair. Lone males seem to work fine though. Peter has my old guy. How is he doing Peter?

Doing great. Grew a bit. Probably over 6" now :) Lots of blue...

oh really? hmmmm may just get a lone one then if they are as aggressive to each other as mont and jgentry have said, do you know how much hes wanting for it?

no, but its in bad shape. I wont speak for him, but probably cheap. It was a beautiful specimen when I had it over a year ago, it was just too passive for my tank at the time.

Hes also having a 20%-75% off sale since hes moving the store to his property. Maybe you could persuade him to include that fish in the sale!

hmmmmmm yes i think i may be super tempted to go by there tomorrow then lol since he would be bigger than everything in my tank atm it might give him some time to heal up nicely.....
