• I just bought a group of 4 (1M, 3F) of these guys and plan to put them in a 55 alone. I was wondering who has experience with these, and if you can raise fry in that size tank without stripping if there is only one male? I have seen video's of this but it doesn't really say if they are eaten or if these fish will parent (at least the females) I usually strip my others to ensure my females aren't harassed and stressed, but I have been told these will parent after releasing. That way I wouldn't have to move them to a growout. They are a small species so I know they can hide in rocks, etc, but I don't want them eaten.

I would think they would be like other mouth brooders and eventually eat the fry once released, even the mother may snack on a few. You might get a few survivors if you have enough hiding places.

I found some blogs and a magazine article that said the females will defend fry “ viciously” . But these are rank raised so I will find out. I will try to get some pix and post.
