This fish has been losing scales on his one side. It seems to be slowly spreading. What could this be? I have never seen this before. He is very active, eating and seems healthy otherwise.

Bump anyone? Any possibilitys? Bacterial infection? Pretty sure it's not fishy TB because the breathing is normal, active and eating.
No white fungus present either.
Or could it be the other ones picking on him? But the fins are intact. They only seem to go after the fins of the cichlids.

Might be getting picked on like jeaninel mentioned. Would just separate it for now and watch. As long as the water is clean with some salt to promote slime coat production then it'll heal. Can't tell if it's an infection but doesn't appear to be one. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Thanks guys! It might be the other astyanax, because I have 5 and they can be hard on each other. I can't find any more to add to my group to disperse the aggression. But I have been doing water changes. What about trying melafix?

Try wetspot. They will get them in once in a while.

Melafix will help wounds in general but not bacteriacidal.

Thanks, I've been looking there, aquabid, Rapps etc. I'm not sure why any astyanax sp. is so hard to find in the hobby. They really are neat fish. They are not shy and will eat right out of your hand.

He could possibly be getting picked on. What other tankmates is he in with?

Tank mates are:

4 other a. Bimaculatus
T. Salvini
2 h. Deppii
C. Robertsoni
C. Rostratus
T. Meeki
T. Passoines
HRP
Rainbow
Syn

The cichlids get nipped every once in awhile. I would suspect the h. Deppii, but this was happening before them. I would bet it's more likely the other astyanax bimaculatus if anything.

I have no experience with this fish but in doing a bit if research it does say that they may feed on fish scales so you're probably correct in assuming it may be the other astyanax

Thanks, yes that could be it. They will even nip at people who swim w/ them. But usually they nip at the tails of the cichlds. They will steal food right out of the cichlids mouth too. I was thinking maybe they aren't eating enough? I feed the tank every other day. I know they have a higher metabolizim than cichlds. Do you think that might help?
My largest female is close to 7". I would love to breed them, but don't think the eggs would stand a chance.
