Anyone ever try out an asymmetric tank? Like having a structure designed for certain fish on one side, and structure designed for certain fish on the outside, but all connected in one tank.

Also, has anyone here ever tried to do a tank that mimics the cut out of a beach? i.e. theres a slope of sand and rocks.

I have also thought about how one could efficiently use a tank to mimic multiple ecosystems that certain fish would thrive in, and use more than other area. Like have a tanks with floating plants on side, and submerged and anchored plants on the other side.

One idea I have been kicking around is building a clear canopy for half of my tank, that is shaped like a pyramid and is about 1 foot high at its peak. Under that canopy I would like to stick one big piece of driftwood, plants, and live insects (probably crickets) to crawl around on the wood, but stay trapped in the clear canopy. This would be a set up for my archer fish, but I have a couple other fish in this tank, and I don't want to build a canopy for the whole tank. On the other side I will keep an underwater cave I have made for a few african cichlids to fight over.

If that is hard to picture I can draw out my idea.

Any thoughts or experience?

Thanks,
Cray

I have not created multiple ecosystems, but I have created the other two. I usually create asymetric tanks for that purpose. I usually incorporate alot of cats and bottom dwellers and this easily seperates different personalities.

The beach is a cool effect as long as your stock is not going to even that slope out. I found maintaining such a design long term to be difficult with my cheeky stock

I modified a 16gal high by siliconing in a partial glass divider, putting sand on one side and water on the other. There is a piece of bog wood that leads from the water to the sand. The land crab digs tunnels in the sand and spends the days in the water side.

Yea I've used a 20 long to do a beach/riverside tank. Sand going above the water down to a planted display. Had fiddler crabs, crays, and hatchets. It looked great but it was a ton of work. It lasted about a month lol. Something I'd like to try is to use one of my fish tanks for a hydroponic vegetable garden. It's amazing how well plants grow in the presence of fish poop.
