I have been absent from MFK for quite a while. I had surgery; I lost two rope fish. One from swim bladder disease. The other, well, I had some help cleaning my tank and the boyfriend pulled out a decoration with the rope fish still inside. Poor girl went right down the drain. I was devastated. Needless to say, I don't leave the room now when something needs to be done with the fish. It took some time for me to get back on the horse. BUT! I just upgraded to a 120 gallon and I'm waiting for it to cycle through. My senegal will have the home I have always wanted for him; as will my new rope fish. They're both big boys and ready for the move. I was considering adding a fire eel at some point later on down the road. Does anyone have any thoughts on bichirs and fire eels? I am a little concerned that 120 gallons will not be large enough for a fire eel. I don't want to take on a fish that I can't house properly and will have to re-home later. 13662021366203

120 is probably a bit small for a fire eel long term. I have three fire eels in my 220. I got them around two years ago at about 4” long. Now, the bigger two are near 26-27” long. I don’t even power feed them. They typically only get fed every 3-4 days and I do a 90% plus water change every weekend.

There have been many cases of fire eels reaching 40”. Many max out around 30-34” though.

welcome back to the hobby! happy bichir-ing :) - regarding the tank size, keep with weekly 20-30% WC and you should be golden
Thank you! It feels good to be back :) And thank you for the feedback. So far, I have differing opinions on the fire eel, so I'm still undecided. But, weekly WCs seem like a good idea anyway, regardless of what I end up deciding to put in the tank. I really like Black Ghost Knifefish, too. It's a good thing I have some time to decide what to do XD

Thank you much for the feedback; differing opinions so far on fire eels. I have read that they can get really large. I was planning on just one. In your opinion, would that make a difference?

I think a 120 is too small for even just one. It will get huge, there’s no question about that. I have witnessed it firsthand and mine are still growing.

I agree with the fire eel stuff above a 180 would be better. I dont think a 120 would be good for a fire eel. My lfs has a 36" fire eel in a display tank its about 300g. Its a huge fish!
Tbh id get some more ropes and another uj or 2. Maybe a couple dithers.
