I am filling out my stocklist for my 8 ft 240 gallon tank. I want to put as many 8-14 inch cichlids in their as is reasonable. I have great filtration and do weekly water changes. So where is my limit? I already know that it depends on aggression, so assume compatibilty. Thanks everyone.

Assuming (as you do) compatibility, I'd say something like 6-8 fish as a max.

However, the presence of any pairs would cause trouble in the long term, so individual specimens would be good. An alternative would be a group of one species (eartheaters types for example).

I have to agree with this unless you like the idea of constantly working on the fish and their structures. Try to not have a male/female also, they get mean as can be when they breed.

I have 4 small fish in a 55g and their a pain in the butt to keep happy!

I am going to go with one pair in my 240...............my dovi.

I already have that in my 210. I am not thinking any pairs.

Look at Terd Ferguson's tank, he's got nearly a pair of all the Parachromis genus as well as others. It has a 96"x36" footprint, which is wider than yours but you have the same length. I think things like this need to be done by way of trial and error. There is no way of determining the right amount of fish before you know each fishes temperament and how it interacts with other individual fish.

I am thinking I am pretty close to maxed out, but we'll see. I lied about pairs. I have a JD pair, but they are low on the aggression scale. My stocklist is:

13 inch jag
16 inch sliver aro
13 inch buttifokeri
10 inch blackbelt
2X 9 inch JD
9 inch freddy
9 inch midas
13 inch african pike
5 inch oscar
5 inch dovii (may be gone soon)

Wow, I hadn't realized I had 11 fish already. Where does the space go? They all are getting along fine. I guess I will ditch the dovii (future aggression) and just maintain what I have. Of course I will see something I have to have at the lfs and create more issues for myself. Isn't that what we do? :nilly:
