Simple enough. At what size does a sump become the best option for filtering a tank? I see a ton of larger tanks with sumps, but no smaller ones, and I'm assuming the only reason is cost- it's cheap to buy a filter for a small tank. So when does the cost balance out?

I didn't start using sumps until I bought my 180gal. Later on a 240gal also. I'd say it's not necessary on a 125gal. I'm refering to freshwater tanks.
I personally can think of few reasons why people generally don't do many of their smaller tanks with sumps-
mostly goes with lack of space and few people start out smaller tanks and do the filter system due to being new to the hobby then they eventually get bigger tanks etc - so many factors involved- it is cost effective to run sump system on a system of 10gs vs running a single HOB- a good question though

Running multiple tanks off of one sump is most efficient. One heater, one pump, less $, more water.
