I was wondering if there is any species of African tiger fish capable of living in a 300 gallon 72"x24"x30"? If they can not live in this tank for life how long would they be able to grow out in this tank? Thank you in advance!

Hydrocynus forskahlii.

One can be maintained for life in a 180 and you could do a trio in a 300 high. These fish, even in the wild, very rarely exceed 18" long.

Mike, aka f22 at Rte 4 Aquarium had some for sale recently.

Or brevis.

Not really. They get as big as a vittatus or tanzaniae.

30" tank raised one:

The current world record, don't recall exactly how big off hand. Think he's in the 28 pound range; this is not an unusual size either:

Also worth noting the tank raised one is bigger than the WR. Like tanzaniae, there's not enough fishing pressure for this species for a really exceptional specimen to have been caught yet.

oops. Before, I was told that they only got 18 inches max by a vendor.

Thats understandable, vendors often confuse the two. I've found that a lot of them actually call forskahlii brevis. In that case they're right about the 18" for the fish, they're just calling it the wrong thing.

For what its worth, the world record FATF was only nine pounds. Most are less than five.

Well the dimensions you gave equal 224.4 gallons. If the tank is 30" wide, you may be able to get away with one VATF, BATF or TATF if the sides and back are covered or blacked out and its kept with several mellow fish like tinfoil barbs to keep if calm. It'll still be a challenge to keep it calm when doing routine maintenance in the tank. They're just better off in a larger tank (4'x8' footprint).
