Well after my last two failed attempts at hyrdocynus I had my reservations about trying again. I knew I would eventually try again as they are my favorite species. I have recently been looking around and stumbled upon this guy at my LFS. Meet my new GATF.

My last two I believe died from smashing themselves into the side. I have since painted the sides of the growout tank. Hoping this attempt is more successful.

Thanks. Certainly hope to keep the updates coming.

Already achieved one milestone today, took cut tilapia today. Not bad for less than 1 day with me. Hope to get him on carnisticks asap.
Yeah some of them predators can take awhile to get onto artificial food. Then again I've also had wild caught fish that took artificial almost immediately straight of of the lake. Just really depends on the individual fish I guess. It's good that he's taking processed food already atleast, shouldn't be too long before he's eating them sticks.

You and I are probably one in the few that think these toothy guys are lookers.

So far so good, on carnisticks at this point. Surprisingly pretty bold also, doesn’t seem to mind me around the tank. Seems to have also recognize me as a food source.

Sounds like you've got a very special gatf then. They're typically annoying to get to do, well, any of that lol

It helps if you place barriers at the edges of the tank such as fake or real plant's to hide the walls and keeps them from ramping up enough speed to kill themselves. Low light or Blackwater's extract helps keep them calmer too. Very good looking hydrocynus!

I believe painting the sides of the aquarium has helped. Also the natural ramp up/down of the led and moon lights. My last vitattus would always freak a bit when the LED kicked on and off so I went with a dual channel timer for this one.
