They are like most characins. They dart and hide quit a bit but seem to calm slightly with time. Last feeding I noticed mine actually came to the top of the tank with the other fish for the first time!
It made me nervous though because he is 12" and sometimes my other fish would grab the shrimp first and like a bolt of lighting hed steal it from them. I am worried is going to miss the shrimp and take their face off!

They are usually fairly skittish but it depends on the fish. The one i have now isnt really bothered by anything and will stay at the front of the glass and watch me. Get one and find out! 
mine is pretty skittish but getting better every day. he is alot less afraid when hes hungry, then hes right up at the glass. very glad i got one. u wont be dissappointed
