just purchased 2 ATI sponge filters rated for 80 & 120 Gallons.

i'm using an air pump to drive it. the airline is connected to the top (cap) portion of the sponge. this is what the directions say.

however, I feel this does not create enough movement since the airline sits on top of the sponge. would it be better for me to place the sponge filter on top of a circular airstone? i'm thinking this would allow more water to move through the sponge, and provide adequate aeration for cultivating bacteria.

Does this filter use an airstone?

I have ran them both ways. First with an additional line and an airstone and then without an airstone. To be honest, I never really noticed a difference. They have more flow than you think. All of those air bubbles are generating current as it flows upwards.

At least run a line to the bottom of the sponge base.Ive found if you just hook the airline to the top, mulm builds up in the base.

thanks everyone.

currently running one as is w/ top connection (i will extend the airline so it reaches the bottom to get some movement down there).

i'm powering the other sponge with a powerhead.
