Attaching sponges to each other to make a sponge box. How?

I found a bunch of nicely pored plastic-based sponges at my dollar store. Want to do a sponge filter with them but they are flat and rectangular. How can I make a sort of box out of them? Sew them together with dental floss? Silicone them together and pray it holds? Melt them? Try acrylic bonding 'glue'?
