It is my understanding that they are eating undigested vegetable materials and then would spit out the actual waste. There are not fish to my knowledge that pick up, "swallow" and digest fecal waste.

The San Diego zoo has a hippo exhibit and the water feature is full with African cichlids. When the hippo poops the fish swarm like piranha
There is/was a similar exhibit at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden New Jersey.

Seen that. Haven’t been there in years, love to use my new fishkeeping knowledge while watching the tanks there.
Disney‘s Animal Kingdom also keeps their hippos and crocodiles with mbuna. Really an awesome sight!

Yes, it does. But it refers to human feces and was never confirmed in any diet studies. In nature Scatophagus normally feeds on insects, crustaceans, worms and plants.
is that a tanganikyan fish in your pfp? I am inheriting some and need some tips on care!
