ok i have a question, now what i was thinking of doing in a few months or so after i have got everything ready i was going to change my tank from gravel to sand and gravel mixed together. i have heard somewhere that you need to stir your sand daily because air gets in the sand??? or something like that anyway...? any help?

I've heard that sand can get gas pockets that build up and hurt the fish when released. I've used sand for years and never experienced anything like that. Maybe if your keeping your sand like 6" deep or something but I just don't see it happening with an inch of sand. In fact I'd highly recommend sand over gravel.

You can get them in either substrate, but it is more than likely in gravel because the waste can settle into the gravel and break down. This is where the gas comes in. If you vacuum weekly you will not have this issue at all. I have never had an issue with it.

thanks for the replys, vacuming sand is hard tho, isnt it? because all of your sand gets sucked up through the syphon.

Yes in my opinion it is. I have one tank with sand, usually all the waste tends to sit ontop. I vacuum this first. then I stir the sand up with my hand.
One other thing to consider is that sand can be an impeller killer on your filters if sucked in. So raise filter intakes higher and stir the sand gently.
I like the looks of the pool filter sand that I use, I just don't like the other issues.

ok, there seems to be so many bad sides to having sand....?

I definitely don't want to sway you one way or another. You must choose whatever your personal preference is. I am just making you aware of issues that I have dealt with.
