Ordered a giraffe catfish from the Lfs near buy. But upon picking it up it looked a lot different. I have picture. I think it's the senegali. What do you guys think. I hope it is due to its more manageable size.

This is a quote from the practical fish keeps of identifying.

This new species is distinguished from congeners in having three horizontal series of dark spots on the body and intense dark spots on the fins, and tear-shaped tooth patches on the upper jaw. This species is known only from the Senegal and Gambia river drainages in western Africa.

Any more updates? I purchased a giraffe cat that looks like yours, and that I'm pretty sure is A Senegali as well. But the size given is 8", but states that's only listed until proven other wise, and that they've worked mostly with juveniles. Was hoping we can get a more definitive max size. Here's mine for comparison

From what I came across, there is little hope at the moment to get anything more definitive with Auchenoglanis. The ID-ing of this genus is in limbo as scientists contradict each other. This thread and the links therein may be useful to you guys and gals: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...affe-that-I-have-here&highlight=auchenoglanis

Well when looking at the pictures on planet catfish it was the one that matched, and although there is debate, finding out growth rates between those of seemingly the same ID I would think would help. The one thing I've noticed however is that the ones who've grown quite large have. Significantly different pattern than mine. There is a more sandy look than I've seen with most giraffe cats. The spots and color of both ours seem a lot more hazy, most I've seen have clear spots/patterns. Wouldn't it be interesting to look into on a hobbyist level.
