Here is his pic. Is the tail gonna grow back? Or is too much gone. If it won't grow back (and he is not being chewed up any longer), what do you do with a disfigured fish like this?

Oh no! Poor guy. If he can hold his own in a tank still, then let him stay there. If he's not doing so well with these tankmates, then it'd be a good thing to find a new tank/home for him. I'm really confused how the rest of his fins and scales look pretty untouched, besides the dorsal fin.

I had to isolate him to recover.
He has been back in the general population for a month, and doing fine.
Funny how they can figure out how to swim without it!

Oh, I saw him getting chased! He is not suffering from the injury any longer, I am just asking how far is too far on this type of injury. I am asking if the tail has been chewed beyond the point of no return on growing back.
Yes I understand I shoulda rescued him sooner. I only have one tank (for now) and i ended up using a "breeding trap" net. And this was right after he colored up and decided to press the issue for dominance with an awesome red shoulder who perished. I am just sick over that, but now I have a contingency plan.
75 gallon tank is for growing out, new 125 for show and spare 10 gallon with a catfish for hospital.

I had an OB zebra that had her tail totally removed. Only half of it grew back. She's back in the main tank after a month of recovery. She's had no problems getting food or getting away from other fish.
