i have a mature male auratus, and i just added a mature female auratus, she was in the tank 5 minutes and he tried to breed with her and she wanted nothing to do with him right away, now he is chasing her around the tank nipping at her anal fin... any idea what hes trying to do or if he is going to damage her?

He's nipping at her egg spot. Which is the gold/yellow dot on her anal fin. I've heard it's what makes the females lay eggs, but only if they want to. He's simpley trying to spawn with her. Obviously the female doesn't want to, I would use a seperater to protect to female from getting stressed. Fatten her up more, then take the divider out. They'll most likely spawn right away. He can do serious damage.
he is smaller than her and wont let her come down from the top, he chases her around the tank until she goes back up to the top, hes a scrappy little guy...
that sounds like a pair.. i quess she is just not ready.. and in that case ... watch that he does not hurt her.. he may have to spend some time in quarenteen/hospital tank until she feels at home .. and gets healthy by settling in..then reintroduce him..vass69;3633197; said:
Quite often a sub-dominant male will keep the yellow colors so they won't get killed outright by a dominant male. I would put at least three more Auratus in the tank so as to spread the aggression around. I have 1 big male and three females (one of which I think is a male).....he will eventually wear down the single fish and kill it...just a matter of time.
Hum.. im 95% sure it is a female, he tried to mate with her after 5 minutes, he tried for about 20 minutes then he seemed to get mad she wasnt. Thats when he went nuts on her.
