Here is a 30 gallon breeder I am using g to temporarily house my 4 crenicichla saxatilis rio mecedo and my group of 6 red ceibal. I'm using their 75 as a qt for my discus and didn't expect to see any spawning activity since both groups of fish are young.

Well...the red ceibal are breeding. Tank water can't be any more than 70 degrees and is unheated in my basement.

Perfect cichlid grow out. Well, except for the heat. All that cover and comfort must be great for them.

thanks. i didnt think it would work long term so i stuffed all my loose plants and some wood and rocks in there. SUprisingly, its working. Fish arent growing fast given the temps and this tank is usually an after thought.

i plan to move these fish out. Thinking of selling them and just running 4 tanks leaving the 30 empty and the 2nd 75 open as a QT tank.

Isla Taboga Panama via Milwaukee
When my ceibals first spawned (at most 3") it was in an algae choked outdoor tank in Milwaukee, night temps brought water down in the 50'F area, and day temps in the 70s. The fry lived on green water and hair algae, and the parents whatever insects fell in. I never did any extra feeding.

In late fall, with water temps in the 40'sF, I pulled hundreds of 1" fry.

Like many other U cichlids, Red ceibas do well in unheated tanks. They can be feisty when they breed. A lot of fun to watch.
Thanks Pete. Did you see my message on simply regarding zebrina with discus?

Red Ceibal breed very young. My pair has been breeding continuously and bite me when I do WC as they are very protective of the eggs. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get any fry to survive for a few days, perhaps because they are kept at tropical temp between 75 to 80. I recently lost his long-time female partner, probably from exhaustion in laying eggs continuously. But the male is now courting a new female. If you get any juvies out of your pair, I would like to get a few.

I'm actually planning on selling all 6 of these and the 4 pikes. All from Uruguay. Pikes are wild caught. Interested?
