Anyone out there keeping bichirs in australia and if so how did you get them? i have never once seen one in a LFS but am very keen to get one.

i dont have any but ive seen them a few times at pet city if ya in bris

Gday mate.

I've not long acquired a pair of albino bichirs. I done my research on them (I was trying to import them at one stage) and they are actually deemed noxious in QLD so I'm amazed to see them for sale in a pet shop. If the store in mt gravatt fails your best bet is to try through some classified sections on the fish forums. Plecofanatics had a superb classified section however it no longer exists. It appears that plecoplanet.com has acquired heaps of plecofanatics members especially australians, the australian involvement is growing exponentially on plecoplanet so it may be an idea to sign up and ask around some of the aussie members for what they know. MikeW appears to have some interesting exotics so he may be able to help you find someone. Your odds will increase if you ask arowana owners as they generally tend to keep or have kept bichirs (don't know they correlation why). Have you done much research on which bichir you were after. Currently I have only seen senagalus, endli, ornate and the odd delhzi in aus. Bichirs tend to fetch a hefty price so they tend to be kept by the serious hobbyists in aus, unlike other countries. Quite unfortunate really because they are amazing creatures. Well good luck with your search mate. If you get stuck feel free to pm me. I will hopefully have mine breeding soon so I may have some fry in months to come.

I am breeding senegals in Perth, ask your LFS to order them from Ken Harvey. He is a wholesaler in Sydney, most large LFS should know him
