Australia
G'day, long time lurker, haven't logged in and posted for a while.

It's long been a dream of mine to have a large tank housing fish found in Australian waters (mostly Australian natives with Redfin/English Perch), it's now looking likely that this will be a reality in the near future. The ultimate would be a 20, 000 gallon setup, but being realistic it'll be more like 3 to 5000. Now I'll be sure to post build photos next year as it goes but in the meantime, I haven't really found too many Aussies that have large tanks. There are the odd ones around on Facebook but most don't exceed 8ft.

Are there any MONSTER Aussie fish keepers here?

Current fish kept;
1 x Murray Cod 58cm/22inch in a 180 gal tank.
1 x Yabbie (Interverbrate) approx 12cm/4.5inch in a 40 gal
2 x betas in split 5 gal.

Will be building a ply tank as well to house the Murray Cod. (Can grow to over 60inches in the wild).

Cheers

There are plenty...but the keep very quiet on social media for obvious reasons

Yeah I get why people like to keep to themselves but I've probably seen maybe 3 people with tanks larger than 1500 gallon. There has to be more than that.

Congrats! What fish are you thinking of keeping/wish to keep if I may ask?

Mostly Australian natives. 2 to 3 of each species would be desired but depends just how big it goes.

Golden Perch
Macquarie Perch and/or Silver Perch
Tandanus Tandanus (Eel Tail Catfish)
Australian Bass.
Redfin.

Then some smaller species that won't get beaten up by the others when they grow. Not 100% yet. I'd love to have interverbrates like Shrimp and Yabbies but the tank just won't be big enough to safely house them with enough hiding spots. It would be great to keep a turtle or two but honestly never seen anybody keep turtles with bass or redfin so not sure how they would go.

Getting pretty keen though as it's been on the wish list for a long time.

Most turtles should be fine provided uvb light and a haulout area, in bigger tanks you generally don't get much "turtle bites fish" scenarios.

Are you going to get a lei aro?

I'd be more concerned about fish attacking the turtle, but then again they should all grow larger together so shouldn't have the issue.

A Saratago crossed my mind as well, however the cost of heating might hurt the pocket a bit. Something else worth considering I guess.

If you plan on going really large, you can consider a Bumblebee Grouper. Keep in mind they need slight brackish and will grow obscenely large though. Also, Aussie Lung Fish are my favorite lungfish, so that would be cool too.

Some Lutjanus would be cool too, you'll most commonly see Mangrove Snappers for sale but they're one of the meanest fish around. I believe almost any Lutjanus would convert to fresh if you put in the effort, and would be an incredibly neat addition.

you can get mangrove jacks although they are nasty buggers and kill everything.
Also a bit expensive, my lfs had small ones for $150 each

Id like to see an big Aussie set up done properly but never have, not even in a public aquariium.
I often wonder what happens to all the little barras and Murray cod I see in the LFS. What state are you in O.P? If you are up north you could do a nice big pond for all of those fish.
