Generally, what's the best diet for these guys and how often should they be fed?

Quality pellet/foodstick with occasionally mp will do fine.

To have a golden looking jar just keep the base white and the background pale

Fish will some how wun darken itself too much.

i would recommend keeping him on hikari sticks and feeding it about 3-4 dried shrimp at night to bring out the color... the color of the fish is what you want to have come out the most
