hey man they arent too hard to care for
escape proof the tank - feed them peas,carrot,corn,potato peels etc any vege matter, put in a piece of driftwood for him to chew on, they will eat meat etc put it can foul the water
i dropped one into my oscar tank as a feeder he escaped, looked after himself and is now 4"+
$20 sounds about right in the states

I cant really add anything to what gran has said other than they are very hardy and are extremely hard to kill, they can live in a variety of water but grow faster in alkaline water.
