My Red Ceibal are still small, under 3 inch, already pairing up and cleaning a site for spawning soon. Hope to get some fry out of them and start a colony with my Cryptoheros species which share similar look, size and behavior.
Looks like pre-spawning colors to me, when mine spawned the female was at most 2", and the male only slightly larger.
The fry seems to thrive on algae, had a pair spawn in an algae filled tank, outside in direct sunlight, never had to add food.
This thread is 2.5 year old. I no longer have them, after failure to get any surviving fry from the pair. Red Ceibal is subtropical fish. I guess tropical temp in my tank all year long Compromised their hardiness.
