i am getting 4 Australoheros sp. ‘red ceibal’ from jeff rapps :Dand were wanting to breed them. I am looking at breeding them in my 125 6' community tank. what is some info i should know about breeding them? they are only about 1.5" now how long until they are ready to breed? How big do the get? any info will be helpful since this will be my first time breeding fish.

They'll start breeding at about 2.5-3" for the male and smaller for the female. They'll max out about 5" or so.

Mine breed regularly on a piece of slate at the base of driftwood. Regular tap water (moderately alkaline, slightly hard). They're in with some Gymnogeo. "blue neons" and some other Uruguayan fish. They can hold their own but aren't really aggressive.

I've yet to have mine successfully raise babies in this environment. They get to free swimming and they kind of lose interest. I think the next step is to give them their own tank and add a diveder with some other fish on the other side (to keep their parental instincts up...but not actually be a threat). I'm also planning to siphon out some babies and raise them artificially.

I plan on pulling them out when they are free swimmers but what should I feed them? What should I pull them out with? Is there a temp I should keep them at so they will breed?

You should siphon the fry right as they start to swim and feed them brine shrimp, they will start eating instantly. Ive had better results with fry once i started feeding them brine shrimp.

I've had mine breed twice so far and the parents ate the fry both times. The male is 4" and female is 3.5". They just went back into spawning colors so I'm hoping for the best this time. I'm in Michigan too let me know if you want to buy 4 more lol
