Phnx az
Is there a particular reason to use a drip over a pump on a timer with an auto top off on a float switch? I have used float switches for years on auto top offs for salt tanks with no problems.

If you're just topping off you're not really changing water. The organic compounds that a water change removes does not evaporate.

I gues I wasn't clear. I plan to use a pump to remove waste water a few gallons at a time several times a day then a float switch will top it off. I've noticed that most people here advocate drip systems to do a constant w/c. I understand this is a more stable water replacement regime but can't realy see a draw back to a pump version.

The reason that I devloved the drip was to keep the new water from changing the tank temps..... I started using sprinkler valves on a controller but it was causing the temp in the tanks to drop so I want to a drip.

If you use a holding tank then the temp drop wouldn't happen.

I was thinking a 5 gallons several times a day should keep temp changes to a mininmum. I gues I will try it and see. I was talking to my Landscape contractor this morning and he was telling me the Hunter sprinkler valves are the most reliable as far as leaking goes. What were you using Rally?

The drip is much more simple too IMO.

well if you figure the money that you will spend on the valves and controller you can set up a drip and it should be less money......

If you do 5 gal several (3) times a day it's close to 1/2 gal per hour.

I have used hunter and another one but i can't remember what it was.

Landscaper gave me the valve. I have a 12volt float switch and a few pumps laying around. Only thing to buy is a digital timer 12bucks and change. Not sure if I can get much cheaper then that.
Anyway thanks for the input I gues I will proceede with plan A for now.
