My 150 gallon tank has been running great, however it's really annoying having to top the tank off. I'd really like to do some sort of auto top off. I tried searching, but could not find anything. I was only able to find drip systems, which I already have on my freshwater tanks. I remember seeing a guy who took a 5 gallon drum and had it upside down in his sump. I wanted to do that but I do not have the room under the stand. I know I can buy the $100 kits, but there has to be a cheap and easy way. I'd like to be able to just fill something up with r/o water and let it continue to auto top off the tank and refill it whenever needed. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How much water are you losing a day? When I had a small reef tank going, I used a gallon milk jug positioned above the tank hooked up to a IV drip. It would last about 2 days.

Would basically be a float switch in the tank that would power a pump in your holding tank. Should be relatively easy, but I would also wire in an extra float switch that is upside down to stop the pump should it get close to overflowing.

Here's one from Google.

Good idea. The tank that would have the fresh water would not have enough in it to over flow the sump encase of a malfunction. I would fill the tank with roughly 10 gallons that way it should last me about a week. My sump is 40 gallons and has about 15 gallons of water in it. That should still leave me with room encase the main pump malfunctions in the sump that brings the water back to the tank.
