I would love to hear from anyone who has any experience with Automatic Water Change Systems that use the Drip/Overflow method.

I am especially interested in how much water is exchanged each week. For example, in a 100 Gallon set up, how much new water would be "flushed through" in a week?

I'm looking forward to the responses to my first post.

Thanks to everyone who takes a look & especially those who share their perspective on this topic.

it depends on how much water u are puttin in if u are puttin in 1 gallon per hour, then 1 gallon per hour will also go out the overflow

I drip 1 gph into my heavily stocked 265. nitrates never fluctuate. it's actually using less water than when I was doing water changes because it's easier to maintain levels instead of decreasing them.

Do a quick search for drip systems and look at rallysman's and neoprodigy's systems...they do good work. (not that other don't! that will get you started tho)

Guess you should be aiming for the usual 20-30%/week water exchange? It is just much easier to perform this with the auto, and NO work!

Am going to try it on a big tank in a couple of months.....

it all depends on how many fish and how big they are.

1 gph would be where I would start.

How does one calculate the 30% per week, keeping in mind that when one drains 30% and replaces it, one has 30% new water, where as when new water is dripping in at a slow rate, each drop falls into a tank of "dirty" water???

I'm not trying to be a pain - - I just want to be very clear when I design my system.

Thanks - - - to all who have posted. I'm finding all of this very helpful.
