I will be leaving for vacation and for 17 days my jardini will have to be left alone- the rest of my fish have are already been scheduled to be taken cared for by some friends. the aro is pellet trained and i want to know what kind of experiences people have had with automatic feeders. i noticed a lot of the newer ones-even cheaper ones- are battery operated- any ideas on the lifespan of the batteries in feeders? All suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance.

BTW Ive been looking at the aquachef, the nutrafin profeed, and eheim.

Hate auto feeders. Can't be trusted ime. I'd just use the same buddies that are taking care of the rest of your fish. If you are worried about overfeeding, premeasure acceptable feedings into zip bags.

I'm going to my girlfriends college to visit her in the middle of march. I'm doing what oscarcrazy posted. Just put pellets etc. in the baggies then label them. Monday, tuesday, etc. Most fish can go quite awhile without food. SO maybe 3-6 decent sized feedings would suffice. I don't have an aro though so don't know how they act without food, so will let some others chime in on that part. :)

The biggest problem with auto feeders is that they clog from condensation. Your tank water evaporates and glues the fish food together so it never falls out of the feeder. I went on vacation for 2 weeks and my discus never got fed once! I understand that they have new ones now that are supposed to be free from those problems but, probably cost an arm and a leg.

My arms and legs were pretty cheap...I think they were FREE?

Maybe i'm wrong...

The eheim work pretty good in my opinion, they do have the fan to keep the food dry. When I got back from vacation my fish didnt recognize me  Seriously they were skittish after getting used to not seeing people and the food just falling from the sky.

I had great luck with the Eheim one linked above. Until my girlfriend dropped it in the tank.

I had an older version of this one for a while and it did OK, but started spinning slower and slower. Not from dead batteries either. Just wore out. It also didn't dispense enough food except for the first few times when it was super full.

thanks for the feedback. i'm looking to order one asap just to try it out. i'm leaning towards the eheim- i'm curious to know the battery life on these.

i will actually be gone for about a month, and the aro will be visited by a friend, but will eventually not be able to help out about half a month in- leaving me 15-17 days with the fish by itself. and btw, the friend i have asked for help doesnt have any room to house anymore fish, he would be already taking care for my gt, and 4 rotkeils. so yeah. sol.
