Hey guys i was just thinking about this today and discussing with some of my friends today about this,

What do you guys thing about automating you aquariums?

Like for example, i now a guy who has a automatic water change system in his aquarium and he never has to lift a bucket or pick up a python(this is probably the only thing i would automate in an aquarium), he used to love his tank alot and used to always talk about it and used to always change something or make a better aquascape but since he automated everything including feeding and stuff he sees it more as decoration and doesn't really do much with it, his fish hide too.

another example was when i bough an eheim everyday fish feeder cause i was going on vacation for 2 months when i came back my fish actually got scared and started hiding i used it for a couple more months and every time i would go to look at my aquarium they would all get scared and hide then when i too it off and start manually feeding everyday they come out more and look forward to seeing me.

so what do you guys think about this?

is automating your aquarium good or bad?

whats your opinion about this?

Mine are all automated in my garage, but it gives me more opportunity to photograph and actually observe my fish without putting them into hiding. I find they stay out more the less Im in the tank.

And I enjoy feeding mine too much to automate that, so thats about as far as Id go. I only use automated feeders for my fry tanks which need 4 feedings a day.

I setup an auto-feeder for a few months and I experienced the same issue.

Before the auto-feeder, when I used to feed them myself the fish used to go nuts when I walked in the room. They would beg like little puppies. After I setup the auto-feeder, they would freak out and hide when I would enter the room. I didn't like that so I'm back to manually feeding.

If I could easily/safely setup an auto-water changer, I would be all over that.

I would do a auto wc not feeder. I love seeing my fish excited. That's what it's all about. And hand feeding :) I would probably do an auto feed on a fry tank though

Auto feeders i hate unless its for koi. Koi should be fed up to ten times in smaller amounts so its necessary but feeding the fish is the joy of fish keeping imo.

Auto water changes is a great idea imo. I find myself not doing weekly water changes on my 220 just because its such a hassle. It is lightly stocked as theres just one jar but i do monthly water changes keeps nitrates are around 40-60. I wish i could do a drip but my local water has chloramine and i dont want to shell out 500 dollars on a proper set up.

but do you guys think there are any health benefits like better color? bigger? faster growth?

can someone chime in on this?

Im all for the auto water changes. But feeding my fish is something I really enjoy. I clean the acrylic every few months and then feed then and change my filter socks. Very low maintenance so I can enjoy the fish more and then get onto othet stuff faster.
