I plan to start selling my BGJD xBGJD fry next week.

They are all around 1/4" and 2+ weeks old. The parents are going to spawn again any day now, and I do not want to have another 500 babies in the same tank. lol

My question is:

How much should I ask per fry?

Seeing as BGJD X BGJD theoretical output of fry would be 25% EBJD, 25% Wild type and 50% BGJD and assuming you can differentiate the EBJD from non-EBJD (wild type and BGJD) any fry you sold would have a 66% change of being BGJD and 33% chance of being wild type. Pretty much making it a crap shoot as to what genetics you'd get.

I'd sell them for the same price as any wild type JD (aka standard LFS jack dempsey), as anyone who wants BGJD is going to buy them from an EBJD X BGJD cross where they have a 100% chance to get BGJD.

That's usually under $5 for a 2-3" fish. I doubt you'll even be able to give them away at 1/4" unfortunately.

Thanks. I can already tell which fry are going to be ebjd. I just do not have the tank space to seperate them at the moment.

I better wait until the fry get larger until I sell them then. Once they reach 1" I will be able to tell which fry are going to be blue gene and which are reg.

So far, I counted around 50 electric blues from this spawn. They are actually some of the largest fry in this batch. The ebjd rate keeps increasing with each of their spawns.

The pairs first spawn only had 10 electric blues.

There is absolutely no way possible to visually tell a BGJD from a standard wild type. Since it's a recessive trait they'll look identical. Genotypically they'll be different but phenotypically they'll be the same in other words.

Well that sucks. Lol

I was told wrong before, so thanks for clearing that up for me.

So the people that are selling "bgjd" fry for $1-$2 each don't know for sure if the fry are bgjd or wild type?

They would know if the cross was ebjd with bgjd. You'd get 50% of each.

As I replied on another board, you probably need to cull the 75% that is unidentifiable. It wouldn't be a good idea to let bgjds get out into the jd breeding population. If you knew for a fact that people who bought them wouldn't be breeding them, it'd be no problem, but there's usually no way to know that to be the case.

It's no fun having to cull, but realistically, you're going to porduce more fry than you can possibly sell, and only the ebjds are actually worth anything. The sooner you can separate the ebjds, the better; so cull the "normals" and raise the ebjds until they have some size to them. THEN sell them...

The only 100% sure thing for bg fry is the result of a blue x regular jack spawn. The offspring would be 100% bg. There is no way of telling a bg from a wild type aside from breeding them with a blue or a known bg fish. Use the non eb's as feeders. I dont think people should be selling bgs at all.

I plan on trying to find a nice male ebjd to pair off with her. She LOVES spawning, so that will not be a problem. lol

I can't cull the other fry ( they are still too cute). I will prob. just end up giving them away to someone locally. It just sucks putting the work into properly raising 300-400 fry, and then having to give almost all of them away.

Welcome to raising cichlids.
