I have been thinking about getting a Gar (dont know what species) and I seen one a a LFS, but wanted to know if they grow fast or slow?

They can grow very fast.. Mine grew from 3'' to 14'' in 3 months.. It also depends on what u feed him.. I fed mine feeders, and now on beef heart and shrimp..

Thats a good growth rate. Do you think I could keep one with a pair of VAFS?

Gars can be kept with any big fish.. It should be big enough not to fit in the gars mouth.. Alligator gars are very aggressive.. I would advise u to go for a spotted or florida gar.. How big is ur tank...?

Right now it is a 150 (5x2x2) bare bottom tank with a renaX4 and a 20gl sump, with a powerhead for current. Oh yeah and I have 2 plants in 2 diff pots. Thats it. My VATFS love it. I had them in a 60 and they were fighting all the time. Since I put them in the 150, they are like best friends

I think u should be able to keep 2 spotted gars in there for a long time, but not for life. You have to train them to eat pellets and other non live food...

I am looking for a Gar with teeth that hopefully doesnt get bigger than 18". Any names?

All gars have teeth... No gar is smaller than 18. There r needle gars.. u can check it out.. I dont think they grow more than 12.. There r african gars.. but also known as freshwater barracuda..

by VATF do you mean vittatus african tigerfish? if so, i would not keep them with gars...they are too skittish and no gar can resist a silvery, fast-moving fish. they will get shredded and abused no matter how big they are, and if they are big, they may set off the gars and you could end up with gars with broken backs. if this is what VATFs are, i would highly suggest against the combo.

and, as stated above, no gar has a wild max of 18", they are all about 33" and up for their wild max sizes. however, in aquaria, several gar species (such as spotted/Florida) will top out around 18-20", generally speaking.--
