Hey everyone,

I have a customer that has offered to sell me his entire aquarium set up. I really don't want it or need it and the price he is asking is a little high. It's a 125 with all the goodies. Hears the thing....it's up and running with fish in it. One of the fish is a red snake head about 10" to 12" or so. Chances to buy one these days are far and few. He won't separate the fish from the set up, it's all or nothing. He is not desperate to sell. I hate to pay a bunch of money for something I don't want just to acquire a snake head but.... What do you all think is a reasonable price for a snake head this size now that they are illegal to import?

Thanks...Joel

what all is in the sale and how much money.. cause you may be able to buy a snakehead soon over here in cinn, OH..

It's a complete set up, tank lid lights, wood stand, canister filters, air pumps, heaters, common pleco, oscar, snake head, big dempsy, perhaps a couple more fish that I can't remember. I have no idea what the snake heads value is. I would love to have one, I have an empty 180 and will have a 8"x3"x30" tank running in about 2 months. I guess my question is what is a reasonable price to expect to pay for a snake head now days? $100.00? $500.00? more? And...What you mean I may be able to but snake heads over in Cincy? What is this secret you know? :naughty:

Joel....

You can buy them in the other northern states, can't you? small juveniles go for like $20 up there. Call some places up in advance, see who has them, and go on a road trip some time. Or post a request in the buy/sell forum.

My understanding as is my importers understanding, they are illegal to bring into the united states.
there are plenty of pre-existing populations in the united states, especially among red snakeheads and gachuas. there are clearly at least a number of breeding populations kept by aquarists/wholesalers in this country... i wouldn't know who/where they are given my lack of interest in keeping them, but they are out there!

When I first joined this site I was thinking wow, America sure does look like a cool place if you're a fishkeeper. Lots of mail order places, cheap fish, cheap tanks and equipment and cheap feeder fish.

But now I'm not so sure with the amount of banned fish, it seems absurd.

I'm now thinking Singapore is the place to be :D

You got that right, Sushi.

I just glanced over the out line of the "injurous species" and snake heads are all illegal to import with out a permit. Permits are only issued to zoo's, medical research and perhaps a couple other situations. It also states it's a fedreal offence to transport a snake head from one state to another. (wonder how that's inforced) I couldn't find any specific information about existing snake heads that were all ready hear before the ban was put in action. I would think that if it is illegal to import them to help prevent them from populating lakes & streams, it would also be illegal to be breeding them and selling them with in the U.S. Anyone know the facts concerning this?

Joel
