Last night I was feeding all of my tanks when I come to my 125 to feed the parrots and oscars. When I went to feed the outside of the tank was extremely hot. I handfeed so when I put the bloodworms in the water it felt like bathwater!!!! I checked the digital thermometer and it wasn't even giving me a reading:WHOA:. Most of the fish were acting normal so but I unplugged the heaters and decided to do a partial water change. Vacuamed out about 20% and added some cool water to the mix. Unfortunately I lost my ABK:cry:(he was dead when I got to the tank) most interactive knifefish I have ever had. This morning my ocelifer synodontis cat was dead as well. He was 6" grown from 1". All of the other fish seem fine this morning but I am going home at lunch to check on them. This tank was a craigslist buy and I was using the heater that came with it so I am not sure of the brand. I use Fluval heaters on my other tanks so I think that I will get two of those for this tank as a replacement. RIP Spot & Jack, you will be missed!!!

that sux man. i dont run used heaters on any of my tanks. My parents did on there cichlid tank and it did the same thing only saved 3 out 16 fish. When i found out what happened i bought them a new fluval heater.

Well definately a lesson learned for me. Luckily I only lost two out of my stock.

300W

Hello; I like to use two heaters on larger tanks. Say two 150 watt heaters instead of one 300 watt. It is somewhat less likely that a malfunction in a lower power heater will cook a tank. On the flip side, if one heater fails during cold weather the other may well prevent a big cool down.
