Okay, I just purchased a small silver arowana 2 days ago. This is my first arowana ever. I know that many large silver aros have drop eye. Does anyone here have a large 20"+ silver arowana that doesn't have drop eye? What can I do to keep my arowana from developing this condition as he gets older?

This is a highly debated topic. Many will tell you it is almost impossible to prevent, they are bred in mass numbers in Asia, which have led to conditions such as these. As with anything though, adequate space and diet, and maybe you'll be the exception.

Silver arowanas tend to not develop drop eye in ponds, and avoid feeding it fatty foods as drop-eye comes from a fat build up behind the eye. Regardless of the method used, aside from corrective surgery, most silvers will develop it.

My 22'' Monster was having prfect looking eyes. I was worried same as you. Read a lot about it. Its imposible to prevent.I'm sory.
It's only a matter of time

Back in the day like 4 years ago I was looking into these beast and someone suggested to put ping pong balls floating ontop of the tank I guess the idea was to keep them looking up and not always down? I have never kept one and I have no idea behind the truth if any behind this

Someone also said to keep them on floaging food. Again it could be just one of those things. But i honestly dont think there is a way to prevent it. Some end up fine and some dont. I guess its luck of the draw.

Personally I believe it's predominantly due to the fat build up behind the eyes, so diet and lack of exercise could be the root cause. Obviously your very large Silvers need tanks that rival small ponds in size, plenty of turning space and ideally a wave maker for maximum exertion. I've been very strict with my XB's diet from the very beginning. His staple food is Blaptica Dubia Cockroaches and Super Worms. These Roaches are higher in protein than crickets. The worms are slightly fatty so I scrape out most of the insides of about 95% of them before feeding and stuff/inject with whatever I choose. Hikari sticks, slither of garlic (good for insides), Aro vitamins, Spirulina and fish oil once a week. He doesn't eat fish so I make up for the lack of this essential fatty acid with this. He also gets the occasional crickets, bull frog, earthworm and Gecko. All being low fat, especially in moderation. Im glad I've 'tricked' mine into eating SW no matter what they're filled with as I can really control his intake on all levels. Just a few ideas for you. Good luck!

Goodluck but most all silvers get drop eye. Don't know the exact reason but that's enough of a reason for me not to buy one.
