So after a good weekend I wake up today and look at my tank and all of my fish are dead. All my fish that i have to save all i have to get just died. **** ammonia. RIP my two 6 inch ocells, two 4 inch RM orinos, and 2 4 inch Geo altifrons. I dont know what im going to do now i guess i have to shut my tank down for a while and save up again or sell it all.

how often were you doing water changes? they have products that will lower the ammonia to a tolerable level but even then i'd re-cycle it maybe even completely clean out your gravel/substrate what do you think happened?

i do 60% once a week, and i add that stuff whenever i do it. it spiked because a messed with the sand to put my driftwood back it.

So sorry to hear this... what a way to wake up...

I am really sorry to hear about your fish. I am currently fighting my own battle against HITH with my O. I dread to feeling.

25% w.c. is more desirable. 50% is usually to much. You clean out all the bacterial growth you need to help the living environment as well and screwing up the cycling of the tank. 50% + is suggested in extreme cases. Also what product are you using to treat the water and how are you treating it? Do you dump it in after water is added? Do you add it to the water pre w.c.? is there a holding time for you new water in?

So basically how do you w.c.?

60% to much? ive been tolded around there was about right, but whenever i get fish again i can change that. i drain the water then i add Kordon's ammonia cholamines and chlorine remover, then fill it again.

50% weekly wc is fine, but you don't want to disturb the substrate more than once or twice a month. Even if you move around the substrate it shouldn't cause enough of a spike to kill your entire stock, I would bet there is a second variable that contributed.

You shouldnt ever have ammonia issues unless something was done wrong...I am sorry for your loss...any idea what happened?

How much do you use the ammonia stuff? If you have always been removing your ammonia chemically its possible that your biofilter has never grown to meet the demand of your tank.

thanks. like i said i stirred up the sand alot when adding my driftwood soo thats what makes me think ammonia, but you could be right about the chemicals. but, wouldnt it not matter if i always add it anyway so even if my filters were not ready i still added the chemical.
