How sweet.... thats remarkable

Ha, and people say a goldfish only has a 3 second memory. That was a pretty smart goldfish.

interesting gar feeder

It's not really following any cues or responding to specific stimuli. It would appear that the fish is simply expecting to be fed sometime and has been loosely conditioned to ring the bell. The accordion had nothing to do with it unless he always plays it when he feeds the fish or something like that. That goldfish is capable of way more than randomly ringing a bell. He could be trained to recognize specific pitches and ring different bells accordingly. Just sayin'.

Very cute lupin he's beautiful!!!!!

Hi Folks ~

Glad you enjoyed the story about my musical fish, Jor Jor!

She was trained via operant conditioning (positive reinforcement/reward-based) to pull a white string that rings bells and windchimes. This behavior has different meanings to Jor Jor depending on context. During training sessions she does it just to get the treat. But she has free access to her instruments throughout the day, and she rings them in the absence of any conditioned stimulus. She rings them gently when she's just lazily floating about.

She also does ring them in response to certain pieces of music. She'll float motionless, oriented toward the music and clearly listening, then ring the bell sharply at a time that she deems appropriate. Usually it's right on the beat.

Late in the afternoon she begins hoping for a second meal or treat, and then she'll ring them quite loudly to call her waitress (me). If I'm out of the room, she will ring the bell REALLY loudly. (And I don't reward the "WAITRESS!" bell, but she lives in hope.)

So, though it began as operant conditioning, the bell-ringing behavior at this point is not just a reflexive, stimulus/response situation. Jor Jor has attached meaning and foresight and I believe (though it couldn't be scientifically proven), aesthetic creativity to her music. Her brain has adapted. Neurons have recircuited and perhaps even new neurons have grown. She has gotten smarter.

People are always surprised by this, and I'm always surprised that they're surprised. Vertebrate brains are remarkable similar across species, so why shouldn't a fish be intelligent enough to develop an aesthetic sense?

But I'm babbling! Jor Jor tends to inspire me to do that!

There are a few Jor Jor videos on youtube, as well. Look for pupteer's channel.
