The Crunch
Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me exactly what the hell an axolotl is? I have seen them before, they are quite common in australia but what kind of animal are they? The wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axolotl is quite confusing as far as i can gather it is some sort of salamander larvae??
Also i was wondering as to what kind of set up you would keep one in as my next door neighbour has a few babies and i was wondering if i should hit him up for some but have never kept one before.. Also, the usual info-aggressivness, tank mates etc...
thanks..

They are of corse amfibians, salamanders for that matter and menbers of the genus Ambystoma (hopping Im spelling rigth:confused:):D They have also the particularity that they are neotenic(more hopping in that Im spelling rigth;)) that is they retain their juvenile caracteristics (like in the larval state) into the adult hood insted of doing a complete metamorphosis like other salamanders of the same genus. And they breed and live all of their lifes in that aquatic state...that is if the water sorce they live in doesant dry;) If that happens SOME are able to full metamorphose into a land form of salamander:WHOA:(however DONT try this at home:grinno: it can have fatal consequences) Its better to give them full and normal aquatic lifes:D
