I tried posting in the exotic pet section and didnt actually get many helpful responses. Soon I will be moving and when I do, I want to upgrade my axolotls to a bigger tank. I want to heavily plant the tank and I have experimented with many different substrates. My worst results(current axol tank) was with sand and my best was with potting soil covered with a layer of gravel.

So Im curious, what do you guys recommend as the best substrate to grow plants, while still being safe for the sensitive axolotls?

Definitely no gravel, as this can cause impaction.

I know no gravel. I plan on adding a layer of sand over whatever substrate I use for the plants

I'd go soil and sand personally. I've heard axys are good ad rooting up plants, so I'd be tempted to go for a deeper substrate if you can so you can root the plants well.

i got an amphiuma which is alot larger and stronger. i use black sand and large smooth stones. the stones keep some plants in place...some of my plants are floaters...and others are in pots but with no soil (philodendren and peace lily). the pots are made of bamboo and fertilize the water. i use no filtration other then plants. feed her 1-2 times a week and thats it. water stays crystal clean. shes 2 1/2 feet right now

click the tank pic to enlarge. click the bottom pic...its a video

I'm not familiar with axolotyls but plants can do well in most substrates. It takes time for the tank to cycle but some of the substrates like eco complete contain the beneficial micro organisms to speed up the process. Many DIY substrates use potting soil and a bottom layer of clay kittie litter. I would use what is best for the axo then find plants that can thrive in it. Most aquatic plants are weeds and like such will do well in even the harshest conditions.
