I have been keeping axolotls for a few months now and wanted to upgrade them to their permanent home. I have also been keeping plants for a few months and wanted to add all of my plants to the new axolotl tank. My question is: Can I use a potting soil in the axolotl tank? I know they are sensitive to water quality and I do not wish to add chemicals or other things to the water.

I love the results I have gotten out of my plants from using potting soil, my plants are growing 4X as fast. Any recommendations on a safe substrate for plants and axolotls?

Soil is not suggested with any aquatic animal!
What I use is JBL manado. It is a fertilizing substrate(also available from other companies) of which you fill a few inches on to the bottom of the tank, and then put a small layer of sand or gravel over it to cover it. Now just plant.
The result is healthy plant growth without health issues for your animals, and without looking ugly or clouding the water (because of the sand/gravel)

Thats why Im asking lol, I love the results of soil in my plants only tank, and the plants in my axol tank(sand) dont grow very well. I like what I have read about the JBL, it mentions fish, but is it safe for the amphibians too?

If its ok with fish, more than likly its ok with amphibians. This is not always the case. Realisticly, no chemicals in it right? Whats gonna harm it?!

This is under water right? I thought I'd read somewhere once upon a time, that there was aquarium "potting soil"... maybe www.fosterandsmith.com ? I can't remember...

potting soil seems nothing like what they would be used to so i would say no

yes, it is underwater for fully aquatic plants. Crayfishguy, I know its not what they are used to, but it would be a base layer with a fine layer of sand to keep it down, and allow the axols to have a soft bottom. Im just asking what is best for plants and safest for axolotls. anyone use the Amazonia substrate?
