I was wondering, has anyone here kept Axolotls, Ambystoma Mexicanum? I just got two, and they seem really cool. There about an inch and a half each, and have thier front legs and are budding their back legs. I was wondering if anyone else has ever kept them, and if so, how'd they like em?

Not those, Olm's and mud puppies, amusing little carnivores.

i have, great pet, one of my favorite amphibians. as with all animals live food can easily introduce parasites and diseases, so prepared foods are a healthier and safer choice. i have had a bunch. my first two were larger, not full size though. they were about 4-5" each. then i got smaller ones at a reptile expo. 4 were about 2" and one was 1". i used a whisper 10i filter for the 2" ones and they never had any trouble about getting stuck to the intake. for the bigger ones i used air powered sponge filters. the best food for them is sinking carnivore pellets, its a fish food made by hikari. that food may be a bit big for them for now though. you should also feed an assortment of other sinking bottom feeder pellets. if the water is shallow they will take floating pellets like hikari's bio-gold cichlid pellets. good luck with them, and if you have any other questions just post them.

Thanks alot reptile guy, good to know. Recently I have been feeding them guppies and blackworms, I didnt realize that that could give them parasites, but i bet it is true, now looking back on it. There growing quick, I've had them for about a week and a half, and there leg buds have already doubled in size, and there becoming more active. They are thier natural mottled color, and seem to enjoy the tank, even though there is a decent amount of water flow. I've put in a bunch of plants so they have a safe haven from the flow. Reptile guy.. what color morphs were yours, how long did you get them to live, and did you ever have one pull an unexpected metomorphosis on you? Thanks alot,

if you want to use live you would have to breed them yourself (as in get a 10 gallon and breed guppies) but that still isnt 100% safe. mine were: one large albino, one large leucustic, 2 medium normals, 2 medium gold albino, and one small gold albino. the small one was about 1" if i remember correctly and it already had full functioning legs. i never had any metamorphose on me, and i had to get rid of mine because my animal collection had gotten way too big, although i now wish the 2 larger ones were one of the few animals i had kept.

Thanks alot reptile guy, a few questions though. how do you breed guppies? I was also wondering if you payed different amounts for the various color morphs you purchased, and rather curious how much you spent per axolotl, you can pm this to me. Personally I payed 20 dollars per Axolotl, and bought them from Ward's scientific equipment catalogue. In the Advertisement they showed the gold morph, but we got naturals, no qualms about that, but the golds did look kick ass. They are cute little guys, but only about one and a half inches long. how big should I expect the little fellahs? I've heard all kinds of crazy numbers, but id like to hear from someone whose actually owned them. thanks alot

to breed guppies just get their water ideal for them and let them do the rest. give lots of hiding places for the young to hide away from the adults or they will become food (for the adults). i paid about $35 before shipping for the 2 big ones. the small ones i got at an expo. the four were about $7 each and the small one was about $2-3. i would expect about 6-8" out of a decent sized adult.

Nice. Did you try to breed them? and if so were you able to get any results?

nope. they were just good pets. i was considering and researching breeding the 2 larger ones, but i never went through with it.
