The science department in my school is ordering axolotls, and i guess since i maintain the aquarium, i get to take care of them. but im clueless. can anyone give me basic info on whether theyre hard to care for, what they eat, if they can be kept in groups... tank size? thanks!

easy to care for - bloodworms, worms, insects even pellets if your lucky, i wouldnt keep more than a pair in a 3ft tank as they can bite each other and lose limbs - they grow back (even grow extra limbs if you overfeed!)

they look great when you have a pair - one black one white.

COuld these mix with a paddle tail newt in a 20 gallon long?

how big does the paddle tail grow?

Those are not suitable tankmates. If you like community tanks, salamanders are not the way to go.

The axolotls will eventually outgrow and injure or eat the newts. They can be kept in groups, but it is crucial that they are the same size. If not, you will have missing limbs or dead animals but the limbs will grow back. They are very simple to care for, just feed them meaty foods or some feeders. They do great in planted tanks and come in several color morphs. I suggest the leucistic form.

they wont be kept with newts... that was an very professional thread derailment lol :D

yeah i suggested a 30gal to my teacher, i guess ill ask her to only order 2 axolotls, and well have to break up the tank with caves and whatnot.

will they eat dried foods?

i doubt it if you work with them you can get them on pellets for like trout i believe. its on those care sheets.also floating turtle pellets are supposed to be good for them because they are for amphibians too.eventually even hand feeding is possible. but my best food and easiest so far is earthworms. walmart has smaller panfish worms. they love those too and easier to go down for them. adults are better fed every other day and yeah id say two would be your best bet in a thirty gallon. remember big rocks or marbles for substrate. they will eat it. the guy that ordered mine for me kept in holding in a tank with small aquarium gravel and he pooped it out for weeks. they are awesome creatures. very fun to watch.
