Axolotyl

Axoltls really only tolerate other same sizes opposite aexes axolotls. Fish will be eaten and other amphibiansa or reptilea will intoxicate it. They do best as only one in a large enough tank. I had 55g with two. This was a good setup. Cold water and will accept frozen foods but they sell a specialzed salmon soft pellet that will make a great staple. Bloodworms are a good treat. These do get quite large though ive seen 1fters. They are fully aquatic and dot need land portions. Very dirty boys so make sure u keep water clean. Females have a smaller bump between legs and tail males get a larger lump.

Easy critters. All the care sheets online say the same fifteen things, so that's a good start. But a lot of info fails at feeding. They will eat almost everything aquatic and squishy. Tadpoles, guppies, daphnia, you name it. caudata.org is a gold mine of info.

Any possible tank mates for axo? Just seen one a LFS and looking into them.. Could I have some info? Plz n thx

it will eat anything small enough to fit in its mouth. anything aggressive will nibble on its gills. It is also a cold water animal and temps over 75 can kill it so tropicals are definitely out. you are safest with no tank mates at all or another axolotl of about the same size.

I have no idea if it would work out at all, but my boyfriend thought to put our 6 inch gobys with an axolotl someday soon. They're nearly blind & non aggressive. Just thought it could be a cool set up for something like that. But I was having the same question as you, so I'll be watching!

Live plants are about all you can keep with them safely. Your best bet is to understand that these are nocturnal animals, and aren't highly active during the day, so you might not get the same impact as a fish aquarium, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do other than designing an attractive setup for one, or choosing something more active.

They are fascinating creatures, just not very active when you want them to be!

Best,
Paul

Mine's active all day. Sees a worm, springs to life - gills go red, chases my finger around etc. Perfect pets.

mine is active about half of the time. floating up to the surface and then sinking back down. not the same excitement as a fish, but still fun. if you feed sinking pellets, you want to try and drop the pellets on his head. He will usually snap them out of the air when it gets close to him.
