Azul Cichla feeding question

I have a 5" Azul that lives with other fishes in a 170G. It has been eating 1 large piece of smelt every evening (since I got it 1.5 months ago) while the other fishes eat massivore pellets in the morning. Recently it has been eating the massivore (and getting thick) while ignoring the smelt. All the other fishes have always ignored the smelt.

Is it worth all the trouble to make it eat the smelt to vary the diet?

Not really, and you should be feeding your fish at that size about 3 times a day, not just once a day. They have a very high metabolism when young. They need to eat a lot.
