Hi guys
I've often admired Oscars and initially I was taken by some red tigers that I scored for free!! One already had pretty bad hole in the head (the donor had pretty much lost interest- that's why they were being given away - but it also meant they had given up on tank maintenance ).
Pics below (if I can work it properly).

However, the more I look at Oscars in the LFS, I like the young ones I see which have nice tiger markings, but they are black and while only. I bought a few a couple of times, but they either didn't make it, or they got more colour as they grew, but never a full rich colour.

A couple of posts have indicated the young oscars have the best colour, but so far I'm struggling to get an adult, tiger oscar, with good markings in just black and white.

Any suggestions?

start off with a small oscar, and raise it using high quality foods that enhance color.
krill, spirulina, and high quality cichlid pellets should do the trick.

Where does one find wild oscars. That green furry one could be pretty rank, but I don't think that's what you mean. You probably aren't suggesting I get one of those giant, two legged condoms in which some peculiar men seem to enjoy spending so much time either (they call it fishing, but when I see pictures of these guys in the rain, not caring if they get wet, but with the funny condom suit on - so they don't get wet - I tend to think thre's a medication issue). Besides, I don't know where oscar lives au naturelle. Should my LFS be able to source "wild" oscars? I won't sound like an idiot?

try looking online for aqua bid websites you might find some on there.....

that oscar is beautiful that you have colouration is great,,,,,the black and white ones you see as juvi are all that colour and as they mature they start to colour up,,,,,wild oscars would be you best shot at natuarlality have a look in the photo setion for post you oscars here thread and look at red devils wild oscars

Sounds like you want an astronotus crassipinnis....Not easy to find, but you have a name now :)

Thanks guys. I like this site. People seem to respond, and many seem to know what they're talking about. I've been on others where you are either sneezed on for knowing too little, ignored or just never get answers that sound right.

Being that you're in Australia I doubt you can find A. crass, but who knows. I put "wild" in quotations because their is an oscar called the "common" oscar that lacks much of the red pigment and looks like a true wild fish, but is captive bred.
