This area is for cichlids that naturally occur as far north as Texas, and as far south as Panama (and all the countries in between), north america.

Why does this even matter.
In general most of the waters where Central American cichlids are found, are hard, and alkaline with a pH ranging from above 7 to 9 (even above).
So if your tap water is hard, they are a good choice.
Many of the fish of South America (not all) especially those of the Amazon basin come from soft, low alkaline water,s with pH range from 7 down to 4.
Many cichlids from Central America are quite aggressive, (much more so than many South American species) and do not play well with others (there are of course exceptions).
Oscars and pike cichlids are not Central (north) american cichlids.
