I just purchased a 4" Alligator gar yesterday.. I bought some feeder fish too, but since Im keeping the gar in the same tank with a Oscar and a Reddevil, I rather not put feeder goldfish in the tank My question is, has anyone ever fed one that size bait store minnows, worms,crickets ect?

I just bought a Florida gar yesterday and put in 8 feeder guppies and they were gone this morning. So I am going to a bait shop and buying minnows by the dozen. I am told it is fine for them, they suggest to QT them but at the moment I don't have time bc my boy is hungry ALWAYS. It will be fine for your gar! My only problem is that I want to keep some bait fish in a 20 gallon feeder tank... But I'm not sure what conditions they need

i fed mine fat heat minnows and about every six months i treated the gar for parasites with prazi pro.
Please do not keep the gar with cichlids such as oscars; it will do better if you keep it in a smaller aquarium, such as a 20 long or 40 breeder, by itself when it's that small. Give it quarantined rosy reds and other minnows; they are preferred over goldfish.

I bought an alligator gar about the same size as yours ,about a month ago. And he has no problem eating minnows ,they are a natural food for them in the wild. My gar eats them just fine . he is no longer four inches he is about 5.5 now. These are great fish. And fun to keep.
