To my understanding, young silver arowana's (2-4 inches) sometimes have naturally damaged fins, and will heal eventually as they get older. Is this true? i thought if fins are damaged, its because of poor water quality, and can be treated with more frequent w/c's and salt. can "fin rot" really be a "natural" occurance for silver arowana?

fins can be damage from nipping too
maybe the aro you picked up got its fins nipped from the other silvers in the tank
the fins should grow back nicely heat and a lil bit of salt helps

how long would it take to heal? i havent tried salt yet, but i've been doing two w/c's a week, and it's had this damage for about 3 weeks now (minor damage)

i dont remember exactly how long but if the fish is alone and water is good and food is plentiful then not long at all

btw, damaged fins are not necessarily a fin rot. Fin rot is a disease whereby the fins "melt" away if not treated properly.

Try increasing the water temp to 30 deg C and add salt.

In one case, the fin rot was too extensive and I had to use terramycin powder to heal the same.

Sorry to hijack but my baby aro was in a tank of other aros and fish befire i picked him up and i think it was nipped by other fish since the since bottom fins isnt as straight and symmetrical. But how much salt are we talking about for a 75 gallon tank? and this is table salt right? (sorry im kinda new to this)

No! not table salt. Aquarium salt that can be purchased at your LFS. I usually do 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. Temperature should be raised to 84-86 F if not done so already.

The fins should heal within a week or two for young arowanas, depending on the severity of the damaged fins.
