Hello all,
I'm new here, so I apologise for any newbie mistakes I make. I have had a bichir (which I only learned recently was it's name since the petstore called it a dinosaur eel) since it was a little baby. I've watched him grow quickly into a fish that could no longer be trusted with my small community fish. I have had alot of trouble finding information about this fish so I was hoping to ask a few questions to those who are likely much more knowledgable than I
1. What temperature/ ph do these fish prefer? my water is always clean and I try to keep the ph neutral and the temp around 70, but I want to know specifics

2. My bichir is about 5 inches long. How much bigger, if at all, is he going to get?

3. My bichir, named dinky, is also the plain grey version. I recently found the more colorful black and orange breed at a petstore some 15 miles away, but they are very young (about 3 inches). If I purchased one, would Dinky attack it, or would they be able to get along?

I'm sure I will have many more questions in the future, and hopefullly a little insite to offer as I learn more. Until then, thanks for any help!

John

if so im pretty sure i got right pic. its senegal bichir. grow to around 12 inchs give or take a couple. not picky on whatter ph, 70s to 82 is good for it to live in. can live many many years. the smaller one is possible to try it. If it look like little one can fit easyly in the others mouth i wouldnt.

thank you for the info. It's very much appreciated. And yes, the picture you sent is definately what Dinky looks like. It's nice to knwo he still has some growing to do. I'll check the size of the little guys in the pet store before I buy them. You don't have any pointers on how to make this fish exceptionally happy do you (either favorite foods or particular structures they enjoy). He's my favorite fish but I feel bad that he outgrew the comforts of my larger community tank. I'd like the chance to spoil him if I can.

thanks again,
John

Dinky's a Polypterus senegalus senegalus temp should be 77-85degrees it should grow to 10-12 inches .The fastest growth should be between 3-7 inches then slowing.during this time they are usually eating machines offer several small meals thru the day instead of one big meal if possible. As for making him happy low light, lots of things to hide under or around, fine gravel or sand bottom
Wil it eat the smaller on? as long as the size isn't that different it should be fine an inch or so they should be ok.That said they are individuals as with any fish watch of any sign of agression and be ready to seperate them -Anne

4" endlicheri 3.5 senagalus <5minutes after th he endli was introduced. .i thought i would have to intervene as the endli would die trying to eat sen. It room awhile but he got him down! Hope this helps!141143.jpg

Whatever happened to this beblondie? She seems to have been a very active poll contributer but when I look at her info she hasn't been active for years?

Yeah it left a big gap here. It almost seems like we need someone to be a poly mod and to update some of the locked topics. Example, where to buy bichir online needs updating
