Hey guys, I just picked up this tiny, tiny Black Nasty from That Pet Place. I’ve never kept one before but I’ve done a decent amount of research on them, so for example, I know they like warmer water and are prone to bloat from feeding them too much protein. What I curious about, and probably concerns me most because it’s so small and new, is the temperature after I do water changes. I did my first with him in there today, probably about 50% because I was trying to balance being cautious with keeping the tank good and clean. Either way I was filling the tank back up with what I know is much cooler water. Does anyone think that will make a difference? At least while it’s so small? Should I use warmer water to refill for the time being or is that overkill.
In the pictures you can see how tiny this guy is, probably about a half inch and definitely very timid. Also he’s in my ten gallon fry tank for the meantime, and he makes it look huge. I’d like to give it optimal conditions while he puts some size on so if anyone has any other pointers about them, please feel free to add any comments. Thanks guys.

Alone in a 10 is a good idea, more than protein, other tank mates that can intimidate them, seem to stress them out more.
With mine I kept temps in the mid to high 80s F until 4 or 5 " when they might move to deeper waters in nature, at that age, they seem to settle into more normal temps. When I did water changes I always matched temp using the hot water in tandem with the cold. I kept fry in sumps where my heaters were located, once separated from the parents.

Dr. Duane’s, thank you sir. Because it’s a small tank it shouldn’t be too hard to refill with warmer water. I appreciate it, I’ll keep it up until he looks a bit stronger and puts on a few inches. I noticed this first change seemed to scare the hell out of him, and I’d hate to kill him right off the bat. I’m just feeding him basic flakes for the time being, nothing elaborate, and I’m trying hard to make sure to just feed him enough, once a day. Sound okay to you? Any recommendations as far as feeding?

It’s a great looking fish as it ages. I have 5 in a 55g that I’ve been growing out together. They live with 5 HRP I kept from my breeders and aside from some chasing it’s been pretty peaceful. Everyone’s about 2-3 inches now and the HRPs are a 1.5-2 inches

Awesome. Mine has calmed down after the water change and finally started taking food from the top of the water. Seems to be getting a bit more comfortable.

They are (to me) well worth any extra effort, mine were some of the most interesting cichlids I've ever kept over 50 years of cichlid keeping.

The 15" (?) one that used to accurately splash passers by at ACA conventions (owned by Ron Georgoni)
was a riot.
